Avila has one golf course, and it's in the middle of everything. The course sits between the hills and the beach at the end of the Avila Valley, and the Bob Jones Trail crosses it on a little bridge. You can see golfers from the trail and the trail from the fairways.
The Avila (formerly Avila Beach Golf Resort)
In October 2026 Avila Beach Golf Resort became The Avila, with a new name and logo and a list of upgrades from its owners, the Rossi family and CoVelop. The launch party is Saturday, October 24, from 1 to 5 p.m. You'll still see the old name on maps and booking sites for a while.
The course opened in 1969 and was designed by Olin Dutra and Desmond Muirhead. The front nine plays through rolling, oak-lined valleys with small greens and hilly lies. The back nine runs out across the tidal estuary near San Luis Obispo Bay, with water carries and ocean air.
The new owners are adding new hitting mats, irrigation work, a fleet of GPS golf carts and an annual membership program. The property also has:
- A driving range with grass tees and a two-tier putting green
- A pro shop and PGA lessons, including junior and group clinics
- Mulligan's Bar & Grill, which keeps its name, with breakfast, dinner, a full bar and live music
- Event space for weddings, parties and summer concerts on the sand
Address: 6464 Ana Bay Rd, Avila Beach. Book tee times and check rates at theavilaca.com.
The course is also one of Avila's bigger event venues. If you're planning a wedding or group event, see our weddings and group events page.

Local tips
- The back nine crosses the estuary with forced carries over water, so bring extra balls.
- Morning fog can sit on the course in summer; afternoon rounds often get the sun and more wind.
- Stay for a drink at Mulligan's Bar & Grill, which has live music on weekends.
- Check the events calendar before you book. Concert days bring big crowds and busy parking.
