Avila is a good town to see by bike. Downtown is small, parking is tight on summer weekends, and the best ride in the area, the Bob Jones Trail, ends a block from the beach. An e-bike makes the hills out toward Port San Luis easy too.

Where to ride

Bob Jones Trail. The main event. About 2.5 miles each way between Ontario Road and downtown Avila, mostly paved, with bike lanes and shade from oaks and sycamores. It passes Sycamore Mineral Springs, Woodstone Marketplace and the golf course on the way. See our Bob Jones Trail page.

Downtown to Port San Luis. From Front Street, ride west on Avila Beach Drive past Olde Port Beach to Harford Pier. Harford Pier is a working pier that cars drive on, so walk your bike or ride with care. The Avila Beach Pier downtown is mostly closed for repairs.

Avila Valley. Ride the trail up to Avila Valley Barn for pie or roasted corn. The barn is at 560 Avila Beach Dr, near the valley end of the trail and Sycamore Mineral Springs.

Getting your own bike here

If you're bringing bikes, the park-and-ride lot at 7001 Ontario Road is a good place to unload and start on the trail. Downtown parking is listed on our parking page, and other ways around town, including the summer trolley, are on getting around.

Riding safely

  • Avila Beach Drive is a two-lane road with beach traffic in summer. Ride single file.
  • Wear a helmet, and make sure kids do too.
  • Bring lights if you're riding back after sunset. The valley gets dark fast under the trees.

Local tips

  • Reserve e-bikes ahead on summer weekends if you want a set time or a certain model.
  • Ride Avila Beach Drive to Port San Luis early, before beach traffic builds.
  • Slow down and ring your bell on the Bob Jones Trail; it's shared with walkers, kids and dogs.
  • Lock your bike on Front Street before you head onto the sand.
