Avila Beach is a small town on San Luis Bay, a few minutes off US 101 between San Luis Obispo and Pismo Beach. The beach faces south into a cove, and that shelter makes it warmer and sunnier than most Central Coast towns. This page gives you the lay of the land so your first day goes smoothly.

How the town is laid out

Think of Avila as one road with three stops.

  • Downtown Avila Beach. Front Street runs along the sand with a wide promenade, restaurants, wine tasting rooms and shops. This is the main beach. See Avila Beach & the Promenade.
  • The beaches along Avila Beach Drive. Heading west from town, the road follows the shore past Olde Port Beach, where dogs can run off leash, and Fisherman's Beach.
  • Port San Luis and Harford Pier. About 1.5 miles past town, the road ends at the harbor. Harford Pier is a working pier you can drive onto, with a fish market, a restaurant and boat tours.

Inland, Avila Valley has the Bob Jones Trail, Avila Valley Barn and the hot springs. East of town, Cave Landing Road leads to the bluffs above Pirate's Cove.

Getting here and parking

Most people drive. Take the Avila Beach Drive exit from US 101, where a new roundabout opened in September 2025, and follow the road toward the water. Street parking in town is free but fills early on summer weekends. A paid lot off 1st Street is the easy fallback, and there's more free parking along Avila Beach Drive, plus paid spaces on Harford Pier at Port San Luis. Our parking guide has the details.

In summer, a free trolley runs on weekends between Pismo Beach and Avila. The 2026 season ran May 1 to September 6. Flying in? San Luis Obispo County Regional Airport and the Amtrak station in San Luis Obispo are both close by. See getting here and getting around.

The Avila Beach Pier is mostly closed

The Avila Beach Pier, the long wooden pier in the middle of town, is mostly closed for repairs. The Port San Luis Harbor District first closed it in 2015 on engineering advice, and repair work has been going on in stages since late 2022. You can still photograph it from the beach and promenade. For a pier walk or fishing, go to Harford Pier instead.

Beach rules worth knowing

The Port San Luis Harbor District sets the rules for Avila, Olde Port and Fisherman's beaches:

  • Dogs are allowed on Avila Beach before 10 a.m. and after 5 p.m. Olde Port Beach allows dogs all day. No dogs on Fisherman's Beach.
  • No alcohol or glass on the beach.
  • No bonfires, campfires or charcoal grills on the sand. Small propane grills are fine, and there are grills by the picnic tables on Avila Beach.
  • No amplified music, generators, deep holes or confetti.

Read the full list on the Port San Luis beach regulations page.

What to pack

Layers, sunscreen and a towel for a cold first dip. Mornings can start gray, especially in late spring and early summer. The water stays cool all year. Check today's weather, tides and sunset before you go, especially if you want to explore the tide pools at low tide.

Where to go next

Local tips

  • On summer weekends, arrive before late morning or plan to park along Avila Beach Drive and walk in.
  • Bring a layer even in summer; late spring and early summer mornings often start gray and cool.
  • Drive to the end of Avila Beach Drive and out onto Harford Pier for fishing boats, harbor views and fresh fish.
  • Leave the glass bottles and beer at home: alcohol and glass aren't allowed on the beach.

Frequently asked questions

Is Avila Beach worth visiting?

Yes, if you like a small, walkable beach town. It's a sheltered, south-facing cove with a promenade, a harbor, hot springs, farm stands and trails, all within a few miles.

How much time do you need in Avila Beach?

One full day covers the beach, Front Street and Harford Pier. A weekend gives you time for the Bob Jones Trail, a hot springs soak and the lighthouse. Our Itineraries page has sample plans.

Is the Avila Beach Pier open?

Only a short stretch near the beach is open to walk. About two-thirds of the Avila Beach Pier is still closed for repairs. Harford Pier at Port San Luis, about 1.5 miles west, is open to walk, fish and drive on.

Can you swim at Avila Beach?

Yes. The beach sits in a sheltered cove, but the water is cold, usually in the mid-50s to about 60°F, so many people wear a wetsuit.
