There's no bad time to come to Avila, but each season feels different. The short answer: come in September or early October for the warmest, calmest weather, come midweek to avoid the crowds, and come in summer if you want the trolley, the long days and the full calendar of events.
The weather numbers on this page are long-term averages from Weather Spark. For today's forecast, tides and sunset, see Weather & Conditions.
Fall (September to November): the local favorite
September is Avila's warmest month, with an average high of 74°F, and its calmest, with average winds under 8 mph. The water is at its warmest too, around 60°F. The warm season, with highs above 72°F, runs from early July to late October, so early fall gets the best of it after the summer crowds go home.
The free summer trolley stops running after Labor Day weekend, so plan on driving or biking. November is when the rainy season usually starts.
Winter (December to February): quiet and green
December is the coolest month, with an average high of 64°F and a low of 43°F. Most of the year's rain falls between mid-November and early April, and February is the wettest month, with about 3 inches over six or so wet days. Between storms, the beach and town are at their quietest. It's a good time for a hot springs soak and a walk on the Bob Jones Trail. If rain does settle in, see our rainy day ideas.
Spring (March to May): longer days and wind
Spring brings longer days before the summer rush, but it's the windiest time of year. Average wind speeds are highest from February through late June, peaking in May. The water is at its coldest, around 54°F in April. Spring is a good time for hiking and the Point San Luis Lighthouse, and the busy season starts to build in May when the trolley returns.
Summer (June to August): long days and full weekends
Summer has the longest days, with sunsets as late as about 8:20 p.m. in late June. Early summer mornings can be gray from the marine layer, which Californians call "June gloom," and July through August gets warmer and clearer. August is the clearest month, with clear or partly cloudy skies about 92% of the time.
Summer is also peak season. The Avila-Pismo Beach Trolley runs free on Friday evenings and weekends (May 1 to September 6 in 2026), and the Friday farmers market and summer events fill the calendar. Parking near the beach fills early on weekends, so read our parking guide before you go.
Midweek vs. weekend
The single biggest factor in how your visit feels is the day of the week. The main lot near the pier fills quickly on summer weekends but is rarely a problem Tuesday through Thursday, and traffic out of Los Angeles on a Friday afternoon can add an hour or more to the drive. If your dates are flexible, stay Sunday to Thursday. Some hotels advertise multi-night midweek specials, so check before you book. See where to stay.
Plan around what you want to do
- Swimming and lying on the beach: July to October.
- Tide pools: Any month with a minus tide. Check the tide table and our tide pools page.
- Whales: See whale watching for the season and tour options.
- Apple season and farm stands: Fall. SLO Creek Farms U-pick, for example, runs September to November. See farms and the apple trail.
- Events: See annual events and this month in Avila.
Local tips
- Come Tuesday to Thursday if you can; parking and tables are much easier to find.
- In summer, plan beach time around the free weekend trolley so you don't have to hunt for parking.
- Look for lodging specials midweek and in the off-season on hotel and visitor bureau sites.
- Check the tide table for minus tides if exploring the tide pools is on your list.
