Flying Flags Avila Beach is an RV resort on the bluff above Port San Luis, at 6450 Babe Lane. It looks out over the boats in the harbor and down the coast toward Pismo and the Oceano Dunes. When the old roadside RV sites along Avila Beach Drive closed in November 2024, this became the place to camp at the port.

Sites and cottages

There are full-hookup RV sites, dry-camping RV sites, hike-in tent sites, and cliffside cottages. The RV sites come with propane fire pits. The one-bedroom cottages have a big fridge, a living area and a deck with a gas fire pit, and some are dog friendly. The resort has big bathhouses and yard games, and it lists an on-site cafe as coming soon.

Bringing the dog

Dogs are welcome, and there's beach close by. For dog-friendly beaches, trails and patios around town, see Avila with Dogs.

Around Port San Luis

Harford Pier is a short walk downhill, with Fat Cats Cafe at its base and Mersea's out over the water. The guided hike to the Point San Luis Lighthouse starts nearby, and you can paddle or go whale watching from the port. Downtown Avila Beach is a few minutes' drive east.

To compare with the hot springs campground and the KOA, see Camping & RV.

Local tips

  • Book early for summer. Since the roadside sites at the port closed in 2024, this is the only camping at Port San Luis.
  • Walk down to Harford Pier for breakfast at Fat Cats Cafe or dinner at Mersea's.
  • Stay up for a launch. The bluff looks south down the coast toward Vandenberg.
