Avila Market Restaurant & Mercantile is two things in one building on Front Street. Upstairs is a casual restaurant for breakfast, lunch and a beer later on. Downstairs is the corner market, with snacks, drinks, ice, six-packs of local beer, pints of ice cream and Avila souvenirs.

There's been a market on this spot since the 1920s. The original was torn down when Unocal dug out the oil-soaked soil under downtown starting in late 1998, then rebuilt with the rest of Front Street. Read more in our history of Avila Beach.

What to order at Avila Market

Breakfast is the easy win: breakfast burritos, avocado toast, sweet corn fritters, smoothies and acai bowls. Later in the day the menu turns to burgers, wraps, salads, tacos and clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl. The bar side opens later with beer and wine, including a good list of local beer.

Hours change with the seasons, so check the market's Facebook page before you go.

Stocking up for the beach

The market downstairs is the closest place to the sand for ice, water, snacks and the beach toy you forgot. It isn't a full grocery store. For a bigger shop, see Groceries & Markets. The main beach is right across the promenade; see Avila Beach for the beach rules.

Local tips

  • Grab ice and drinks downstairs before you set up on the sand.
  • Breakfast burritos and acai bowls make an easy beach breakfast.
  • The bar side pours local beer later in the day.
